A man who allegedly posed as the child of a senior official and fabricated chat records with entertainment industry insiders has been arrested for defrauding a victim of more than 1.8 million yuan. The suspect reportedly promised to arrange a concert by the famous singer Nicholas Tse to carry out the scheme.

According to the investigation, the suspect, identified as Gu, built a false persona to gain the victim's trust. He went so far as to create fake conversations with a supposed entertainment executive to convince the victim of his influence. The elaborate ruse was designed solely to extract money under the pretense of securing a major performance deal.

The case came to light at the end of April when the female victim, identified as Chen, went to the police in Putuo District. She reported that she had been cheated out of 1.8 million yuan by an individual who claimed he could help book Nicholas Tse for a concert. After receiving the report, the police immediately launched an investigation into the matter.

Chen had met Gu through a friend in October 2023. At that time, he introduced himself as the son of a high-ranking official with extensive connections. Since he presented no immediate request, she viewed the introduction as a simple acquaintance. However, the situation took a turn in February 2025 when Chen mentioned her interest in event planning at a dinner and asked if Gu could connect her with the singer for a performance.

Gu readily agreed and claimed he had direct access through the son of a major entertainment company's president. Although Chen was initially doubtful, she lowered her guard after Gu presented him with his fabricated chat records. Following this display of supposed influence, Gu requested a payment of 1 million yuan for 'processing fees'. Chen transferred the funds in late March and even accompanied Gu to Beijing to finalize the agreement.

While in Beijing, Gu consistently acted alone, explaining that the 'big shot' was not comfortable meeting strangers. He simply assured Chen that matters were being handled. During this period, he continued to request further funds, citing expenses like the purchase of luxury watches as gifts for the insiders. Eventually, when the concert still fell through and Gu ran out of excuses, Chen realized she had been deceived and sought legal help.

Police verification proved that Gu's claims were entirely fabricated, including his background and educational credentials. After gathering substantial evidence of his criminal actions, officers traveled to another province to execute an arrest on May 27. With the support of the local authorities, Gu was captured at his hideout.

Following his arrest, Gu confessed to his crimes. He stated that he created the fake identity to satisfy his vanity. The idea to swindle money came only after hearing of Chen's desire to host a concert. He invented his connections with alleged insiders and used photo editing software to create the false chat logs to support his lies.

While traveling with Chen in Beijing, Gu used the stolen money to fund nights of drinking at KTV venues. At the same time, he sent messages claiming he was in meetings with the singer's assistant and other entertainment tycoons. The full amount of the fraud, 1.8 million yuan, was spent entirely on his personal entertainment and consumption.

The suspect has been formally arrested on suspicion of fraud and is currently awaiting further legal proceedings. The case is still under active investigation, with police probing all the details of his activities.
