Newly released data from WindEurope shows that Europe added 8.8 gigawatts of new wind capacity during the first half of 2026, a 30 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025. Onshore wind accounted for 6.5 gigawatts, representing 74 percent of the total additions.

The newly installed capacity is sufficient to power approximately seven million European households annually and can offset fossil fuel imports equivalent to 25 liquefied natural gas carriers per year. Based on this momentum, WindEurope projects that total new wind installations for all of 2026 could reach 24 gigawatts, setting a new record.

Despite the strong performance, the industry association cautioned that slowing permit approvals and persistent grid connection bottlenecks could hinder future expansion and temper long-term growth prospects.
