Indonesia's acting central bank governor, Destry Damayanti, has stated her focus will remain on maintaining stability and implementing proactive measures to support the rupiah exchange rate. Legislators are currently reviewing her nomination for the top post, and upon approval, she is set to serve a full five-year term.
"From a monetary perspective, the primary focus remains on maintaining stability while providing room for economic growth," Destry stated during a parliamentary fit-and-proper test on Wednesday. "We will manage the rupiah exchange rate policy in a pre-emptive and forward-looking manner to sustain its stability," she explained, echoing the language used by her predecessor Perry Warjiyo, who abruptly resigned in July.
Mukhamad Misbakhun, chairman of the parliamentary commission overseeing financial affairs, indicated that Destry's tenure would span from 2026 to 2031 once lawmakers give their approval. If confirmed, she would become the first female governor in the history of the central bank since its establishment in 1953.
The latest development is likely to reassure investors, who had been unsettled by Warjiyo's departure two years ahead of schedule. Destry, a seasoned economist and Warjiyo's long-serving deputy, has alleviated market concerns about any sudden shift in monetary policy following her nomination.
