CM Bank Expands Workforce as New Leadership Drives Strategic Push

Since Wang Xiaoqing took the helm as president in late April 2026, market watchers have closely tracked the strategic trajectory of China Merchants Bank. The 54-year-old executive, whose career spans insurance, fund management, and banking, has earned recognition for his cross-sector expertise. Before joining the bank, however, most of his public engagements centered on forums tied to fund and insurance asset management. Now, Wang is stepping into the spotlight, articulating a clear operational vision for the institution.

At the bank's 2025 annual shareholders' meeting in June 2026, Wang outlined a four-pronged management philosophy: prioritizing customer centricity, upholding asset quality, reinforcing the retail banking core, and sustaining technology investment. By August, he made his debut as president at the interim results conference, walking investors through the bank's performance, current operations, and responses to pressing concerns. When asked whether the bank's growth momentum could be maintained, Wang affirmed, "That is our goal." He elaborated, "We aim to steadily showcase a constructive trajectory through relentless effort, cementing improvements in growth and asset quality management that yield stronger outcomes over time."

As of the first half of 2026, China Merchants Bank's total assets surpassed 13.78 trillion yuan, up 5.47% from the end of the prior year. The bank sustained gains in both revenue and net profit during this period, with operating income reaching 178.181 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 4.83%, and net profit attributable to shareholders hitting 76.445 billion yuan, up 2.02%. This marks a notable turnaround, as revenue had declined in the first halves of both 2024 and 2025. The recovery is far from incidental. The bank expanded its loan and deposit portfolios while tightening liability-side cost controls to offset downward pressure on asset yields, driving net interest income up 5.60% year-on-year to 112.022 billion yuan, which accounted for 62.87% of total revenue. Meanwhile, it intensified efforts in intermediary business to bolster wealth management. Non-interest income grew 3.56% to 66.159 billion yuan, comprising 37.13% of revenue, though slightly down 0.46 percentage points from a year earlier. Net fee and commission income climbed 5.99% to 39.855 billion yuan, with wealth management fees surging 26.53% to 16.192 billion yuan.

Looking ahead, the bank continues to grapple with multiple headwinds, and operational pressure remains unresolved. Net interest margin narrowed further, slipping to 1.83% in the first half of 2026, a 5-basis-point dip year-on-year. More strikingly, the "retail king" foundation shows signs of strain. Profit from retail banking fell sharply, with pre-tax profit dropping 17.58% year-on-year to 42.888 billion yuan, now representing 47.27% of total pre-tax profit, down 11.26 percentage points. Retail revenue edged up just 0.65% to 96.82 billion yuan, accounting for 54.34% of total operating income, a decline of 2.25 percentage points. Retail loan balances also contracted, slipping 1.08% from the end of last year to 3.68 trillion yuan, or 49.38% of total loans. Among these, individual housing loans fell 1.73% to 1.40045 trillion yuan. Critically, retail asset quality has deteriorated. Retail non-performing loans rose to 42.832 billion yuan, up 3.248 billion yuan from the end of 2024, with the NPL ratio climbing 10 basis points to 1.16%. Management cautions that industry-wide retail credit risk is still on the rise.

Overall, the bank's asset quality remains stable. Total non-performing loans reached 70.251 billion yuan as of June 2026, an increase of 2.045 billion yuan, though the NPL ratio held steady at 0.94%. To cushion against potential risks, the bank stepped up provisioning, with credit impairment losses rising 18.49% year-on-year to 29.177 billion yuan. Cost discipline is also bolstering profitability. The cost-to-income ratio improved to 29.7%, down 0.41 percentage points from the end of last year. Operating and administrative expenses grew 3.40% to 52.912 billion yuan, with employee costs up 2.66% to 36.428 billion yuan and business expenses rising 5.08% to 16.484 billion yuan.

Notably, the bank has expanded its workforce. As of June 30, 2026, headcount (including dispatched staff) reached 121,959, an increase of 374 from 121,585 at the end of last year. Corporate banking added 238 employees to reach 21,388, while retail finance grew by 270 to 54,446. As a frontrunner among national joint-stock banks, China Merchants Bank carries heightened expectations from investors. The hope is that Wang Xiaoqing's leadership will deliver on that promise.
