September 1, U.S. stocks closed lower across the board after an afternoon fade erased early tech-driven gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.70%, the S&P 500 slipped 0.33% and the Nasdaq Composite inched 0.12% lower as investors weighed a rise in Treasury yields and cautious positioning ahead of this week’s key economic data.

Strong single-stock rallies were outweighed by weakness in several megacaps. Tesla jumped 5.51%, extending its August rebound on ongoing optimism about its AI initiatives, while data-hardware peers SanDisk advanced 5.50% and Micron Technology added 2.77%. MicroStrategy climbed 4.42% and Nvidia rose 1.36% as the AI theme kept semiconductor sentiment upbeat; SK hynix gained 2.20%. On the downside, Amazon slid 2.50% amid concerns over consumer spending, Alphabet’s Class C shares fell 2.18% and Microsoft eased 1.22%; Alibaba’s U.S.-listed shares retreated 4.10% in sympathy with weakness in Chinese internet names.

Outside the headline names, volatility spiked in niche corners of the market. Leveraged vehicle Direxion Daily TSLA Bull 2X Shares rallied 11.02%, while fintech Circle Internet added 9.65%. Chinese small-cap Antelope Enterprise soared 83.33%, and aesthetics platform So Young leapt 21.25%. In contrast, e-commerce retailer MINISO sank 9.97%, logistics platform GigaCloud tumbled 8.35%, and data-center operator VNET slid 7.48% as profit-taking hit recent high-flyers.
