Beijing Debuts Robotic Inspection Pilot for Special Equipment Testing

On December 2nd, the first on-site pilot test of intelligent robotic inspection for special equipment in Beijing was completed in Fengtai District. During the trial, robots took over from human inspectors, unlocking a brand-new operational scenario for special equipment testing. The robot moved autonomously and steadily along the outer wall of a pressure vessel, performing continuous scanning operations across the equipment surface.

Equipped with a high-precision detection probe, the robot automatically collected wall thickness data, transmitted measurements in real time, and simultaneously stored the records. This allowed for a complete reconstruction of the equipment's wall condition, turning previously hard-to-reach and high-risk detection points into fully coverable inspection zones, thereby establishing an entirely new mode of operation for special equipment examinations.

Compared to the traditional manual "point-to-surface" sampling and thickness measurement approach, the intelligent robot enables continuous scanning and detection, significantly enhancing both measurement coverage and data accuracy. Furthermore, inspection operations no longer rely heavily on erecting scaffolding or requiring workers to climb at heights, while also eliminating the need to work in confined spaces. This not only drastically shortens preparation lead times and reduces enterprise operation and maintenance costs, but also lessens the physical strain on inspectors, fundamentally mitigating serious safety hazards such as falls from height and confined-space operations.

A representative from the Fengtai District Market Supervision Administration stated that this successful thickness measurement task performed by the intelligent robot served as a practical validation of smart technology within the district's special equipment inspection framework. It fully demonstrated the technical feasibility and operational reliability of robots participating in such examinations. Looking ahead, Fengtai District plans to actively explore broader applications of intelligent robots across more special equipment testing scenarios, using technological means to reinforce safety defenses. The goal is to steadily advance special equipment inspection toward digitalization, intelligence, and routine robotic use, providing replicable Fengtai experience for the city-wide adoption of smart inspection and intelligent supervision of special equipment.
