Nigerian Currency Poised for Strongest Annual Rally in Seven Years Driven by Oil Gains and Record Remittance Flows

Based on analyst projections, Nigeria's naira is heading toward its most impressive yearly performance in nearly a decade, thanks to sustained dollar inflows from higher oil prices and a surge in remittances that are helping the currency withstand political risks typically linked with election cycles.

According to the average forecast from four market analysts, the naira is expected to firm to approximately 1,290 per US dollar by year-end, a notable improvement from its current trading level of 1,328.92. Such a move would extend the currency's year-to-date appreciation from roughly 8% to nearly 12%, marking what would be its strongest annual gain in at least seven years.

"We're witnessing a steady and healthy flow of foreign exchange into the economy, supported by quite robust foreign reserves," said Olaolu Boboye, an analyst at CardinalStone in Lagos, during a phone interview. "While there are concerns surrounding the elections, given these inflows, we believe there is little cause for worry."

Africa's most populous nation is set to hold presidential, gubernatorial, and legislative elections in the first quarter of next year. Historically, this period has placed significant pressure on the naira, as uncertainty over electoral outcomes and the direction of economic policy tends to fuel increased demand for dollars.

Adding to the positive momentum, remittance inflows from Nigerians living abroad grew by 50% year-on-year during the first seven months of this year, reaching $3.8 billion. Meanwhile, the currency has also drawn support from elevated oil prices, triggered by disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz stemming from the Iran conflict, alongside increased crude production and enhanced domestic refining capacity.
