Meta Platforms Inc.has released its most powerful artificial intelligence model to date, with the company鈥檚 chief AI officer stating that the new system鈥檚 performance has moved it closer to leading competitors.

The company confirmed that developers can access and pay to use Muse Spark 1.3 starting Wednesday. Meta also plans to roll out this update to users of Instagram, Facebook, and its own AI assistant platform in the near future.

In an interview on Wednesday, Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang described the release as "our largest leap forward in model performance to date," highlighting notable progress in coding and agentic capabilities.

Wang stated that this upgrade places Meta鈥檚 technology on par with the latest AI models from OpenAI and Anthropic. He said Muse Spark 1.3 is "competitive" with Anthropic鈥檚 Claude Fable 5.1 and "superior" to GPT-5.6 Sol from OpenAI, particularly when it comes to programming tasks.

However, OpenAI is expected to release a more advanced model called Astra in the near future.

Direct comparisons between different AI models remain difficult, as some systems perform better on certain tasks and worse on others. Benchmark parameters can also be artificially optimized and may not accurately reflect real-world performance.

Wang indicated that Meta has not yet decided whether to publicly release the model weights for Muse Spark 1.3. Making the weights public would allow external developers to download, run, or build upon the model independently.

Nevertheless, Wang confirmed that the company still intends to release the weights for the previous version, Muse Spark 1.2. He also stated that Meta鈥檚 highly anticipated larger model, codenamed "Watermelon," remains on schedule.
