Micron Under Threat as China's CXMT Delivers Cutting-Edge Chip. How to Win from Both.

The Chinese memory-chip problem won't go away for Micron Technology. But there's an easy way for shareholders to benefit from the fierce competition.

China's CXMT isn't resting on its laurels after its blockbuster initial public offering and a first earnings report as a listed company showing nearly tenfold revenue growth. On Friday, it claimed it had achieved the world's first commercial deployment of LPDDR6-the next-generation of memory for smartphones and other devices.

The announcement comes as something of a shock. It could be the first time a Chinese memory-chip company has brought a cutting-edge standard to the market ahead of rivals such as Micron or South Korea's Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. However, it remains to be seen what volumes and quality of production CXMT can achieve. So far it has only announced it will supply LPDDR6 for Xiaomi's 18 Fold foldable smartphone.

Although the current memory boom is being driven by demand for high-bandwidth memory to be used in artificial-intelligence servers, Micron shareholders shouldn't dismiss the potential importance of CXMT's achievement. It's clear evidence of its ambition, as is the recent news CXMT is suing the Pentagon to try to get itself off a blacklist designating the company as a "Chinese military company."

But it doesn't have to be a zero-sum game for American investors. There's an easy way to get access to Micron, CXMT, and multiple other memory-chip companies in the form of the Roundhill Memory ETF, trading under the ticker DRAM.

The DRAM ETF has a 4.95% weighting in CXMT, way behind its 25% weighting in Micron. That looks sensible considering Micron's generally superior technology and questions about whether CXMT will be forced by Beijing to prioritize domestic customers. Micron shares were up 1% in premarket trading Friday.

Still, it doesn't hurt to spread your bets.
