South Korean shares gained marginally on technology stocks' gains after hawkish comments from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh dragged markets lower earlier in the day. Major market movers Samsung Electronics (KRX:005930) and SK Hynix (KRX:000660) added over 1% at market close.
The Korea Composite Stock Price Index, or Kospi, increased by 31.14 points, or 0.5%, to close at 6,820.02. The Kosdaq fell by 4.12 points, or 0.5%, to close at 834.29.
In economic news, South Korea's all industry production index, which measures output across the mining, manufacturing, services and construction sectors, was steady in July from a month earlier, according to data released by Statistics Korea on Monday.
The index compared with a 2.4% increase in June and stood at 120.2 points based on a 2020 benchmark of 100.
On an annual basis, the all-industry production index rose 3.1%, softer than the 4.4% growth in the previous month.
In corporate news, Samsung Biologics (KRX:207940) said its Switzerland-based unit, Samsung Peptide, has published the prospectus for its public tender offer for PolyPeptide Group, according to a Monday release.
The offer includes 44.31 Swiss francs in cash per PolyPeptide share, implying an equity value of about 1.46 billion francs, and represents a 40% premium to the unaffected share price.
The offer is expected to run between Sept. 15 and Oct. 12, subject to a minimum acceptance threshold, and the largest individual shareholder, Draupnir Holding, with about a 55.65% stake, has committed to tendering all its shares.
Shares of Samsung Biologics rose more than 2% at market close.
In other news, Samsung Heavy Industries (KRX:010140) secured a 444.5 billion won contract to build two container ships for an unnamed African buyer, according to a filing with the Korean bourse on Monday.
The contract is valid from Aug. 28, 2026, to Dec. 27, 2028. Payment will be made as construction progresses, the filing said.
Shares of Samsung Heavy Industries fell more than 1% at market close.
