Altcoins Post Big Gains as Bitcoin Moves Past $80,000

Major cryptocurrencies are in for an even-larger boost, breathing life into a segment of the market that has been largely ignored for years. Bitcoin is up 4.7% to $81,040, while select "altcoins," or cryptocurrencies outside of bitcoin, are posting even larger gains today. XRP is up 8.1% to $1.46, accelerating strong gains seen this week. Dogecoin is up 9.4% to 8.9 cents, Zcash rises 16.2% to around $947, and cardano climbs 10.9% to 22.3 cents. "Buying momentum is no longer concentrated solely in Bitcoin, but is beginning to spread across a wider portion of the crypto ecosystem," says Antonio Di Giacomo of XS.com in a note. He attributes part of this buoyancy to a stronger possibility of cryptocurrency regulations passing through Congress.
